375: I have to take off!

Subtitles:

Ne oldu, Gülfem?
= What happened, Gülfem?

kusura bakma, Ömer.
= Sorry, Ömer.

Ben kalkmam lazım.
= I have to take off.

Vocabulary:

ne [= what]

oldu [= happened]
past simple tense from “olmak” [= to be; to happen; to become]

ne oldu? [= what happened?; what’s the matter?; what’s wrong?]

kusura bakma [= sorry; pardon me; excuse me; forgive me]

Tip:
The phrase “kusura bakma” is composed of the noun “kusur” [=impoliteness; fault] + the negative imperative “bakma” [= don’t look] from “bakmak” [= to look]. The phrase altogether comes from “kusura bakmamak” [= to let it pass]. The literal meaning then would be [= don’t look at my fault]. The meaning intended here is “pardon me” or “excuse me” etc. If you want to sound formal, use: “kusura bakmayın”. The most common response to this is: “estağfurullah!” [= don’t mention it; not at all].

ben [= I]

kalkmam [= my leaving; my departure; my take-off]
“kalkmam” is a noun and with “lazım” it forms a sense of obligation.

kalkmam lazım [= I have to leave; I have to get up]
